Duke is required to submit reports to federal and state regulators on lobbying, tax and related activities of Duke employees and contractors on Duke’s behalf. Activities must be reported in the quarter in which they occurred. In general, student organizations should not pay for lawmakers’ travel expenses or entertainment. The ethics policies of federal and state legislative bodies generally forbid lawmakers from accepting such reimbursement. However, providing meals as part of a widely attended event is generally acceptable. For more information about Duke’s policies on lobbying and requirements for reporting expenditures, please see http://www.duke.edu/federalrelations/policies/lobbying.html . If you have questions about this policy or reporting requirements for speakers at your event, contact Duke’s Office of Federal Relations at dukefederalrelations@duke.edu.
